Lonicera nitida (Honeysuckle 'Baggesen's Gold')

LOCATION: Fletcher Moss Park

Lonicera has a wide variety of species and it can be both an evergreen and a deciduous shrub. Usually the plant has much brighter yellow leaves compared to the species I found. The leaves are tiny and ovate. It produces pale violet berries which are unsignificant and very sparse. The plant grows 1-1.5m high and wide and prefers well-drained and moist soils. It can be used as a tall groundcover under the trees or, as it is in this case, a hedge.

I found this species growing along a busy street right outside the entrance to Fletcher Moss Park. It had a very dense foliage and branch formation. This plant was an evergreen and the leathery, shiny and yellowish-green leaves stayed throughout autumn and winter. The plant also developed short spokes on its bright brown twigs.
